Laminate

Dental Laminates are sometimes also called Dental Veneers. They are basically tooth colored shells placed as a cover over the tooth to improve appearance. These shells are attached to the front of the teeth, thus changing their color, size, length, and shape. They can be made from porcelain or resin materials. Your dentist would suggest the best option for you.

Laminates are usually used to fix:

  • Discolored teeth
  • Chipped / Broken teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Worn-down teeth
  • Misaligned teeth

Getting a dental laminate is usually completed through 3 trips to the dentist, the first one being a consultation. First, the dentist takes a little enamel from your teeth, then he goes on to make a model impression of your mouth. A couple of weeks later, based on the enamel and the model, the laboratory makes the laminate. Once done, the dentist will then trim the edges of the veneer to ensure a perfect fit.

There are various pros to having a laminate done:

  • It looks like a natural tooth
  • They are stain-resistant
  • Gum tissue tolerates porcelain well

There are however quite a few cons as well to having this procedure done

  • This procedure is irreversible
  • Laminates are not repairable if incase they chip off or crack
  • Laminates are more expensive
  • Laminates do not prevent decay in any way
